[Review] The Furies: A Thriller – Mark Alpert

Book Title:                   The Furies: A Thriller (Standalone)
Author:                           Mark Alpert
Number of pages:    320

Synopsis:The Furies - Mark Alpert

For centuries, the Furies have lived among us. Long ago they were called witches and massacred by the thousands. But they’re human just like us, except for a rare genetic mutation that they’ve hidden from the rest of the world for hundreds of years.

Now, a chance encounter with a beautiful woman named Ariel has led John Rogers into the middle of a secret war among the Furies. Ariel needs John’s help in the battle between a rebellious faction of the clan and their elders. The grand prize in this war is a chance to remake the human race.

Mark Alpert’s The Furies weaves cutting-edge science into an ingenious thriller, showing how a simple genetic twist could have inspired tales of witchcraft and sorcery, and how the paranormal could indeed be possible.

Should this book be picked up? the tl;dr spoiler-less review:

– A “chase-thriller” with a variety of fast-paced action sequences involving guns and explosives, a ferryboat, and many bullet ants.
– Despite romance driving the protagonists actions and the synopsis sounding as if it’s a paranormal romance… it’s not.
– Speculative-fiction that considers a variant genome which has caused disparity and civil unrest between the genders of the Furies.
– Generally immaculate world building that gives nod to historical timelines and paints a realistic landscape of various settings.
– Narrative pacing is a hit or miss as perspectives change between major and minor characters.

Initial Thoughts:

Sooooo…the Salem Witch Trials lay the groundwork for this mixed grab bag of witchy woo-woo speculative fiction which isn’t as paranormal as I initially thought. To be frank, I thought the Furies were the name for a species or something. Nope, it’s actually a family lineage. With the tagline of being a thriller, its success is a toss-up erring on the side of being flat through the course of its journey. While not a disastrous read by any means, there is a considerable nod given toward historical attributions emphasized by differing societies concerning the unordinary superstitious behaviours of [insert-your-religion-of-choice-here]. With this in mind, it isn’t executed to the potential that I thought it could have been. But the cover is kind of rad though.

Full disclosure: I received an advanced reader copy of The Furies: A Thriller through NetGalley for an honest review. I extend my thanks to St. Martin’s Press for providing me the opportunity to review this book.

Disclaimer: There may be spoilers inherent to this review from this point onward.

[Top Ten Tuesday] – #16 – Top Ten Bookish Items I Own In An Alternate Reality

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. I thought this would be a fun way to share a condensed version of potential rambles and thoughts that I have.

This Week’s Theme:
Top Ten Bookish Items I
Own In An Alternate Reality

Initial Thoughts:

This weeks theme delved into bookish items (excluding books) that we all want to own. And of course I attempted to change it up. But you can definitely just fast forward to the actual numbered list and skip the blue highlighted text.

So fear the sentence fragments and terrible rhymes as I take you through the journey that could as well be one of yours. I didn’t actually intend to write it like this but it began this way and I just decided to continue the trend of displaying these lists differently. I hope you do enjoy it? (and it was kind of difficult in some parts :/ …)

Eyes open, alarm unbroken. Still groggy, mind’s a foggy. Morning routine: make yourself clean. Check the weather? Dress for better. Styling with flair? Dishevel that hair. Accessorize? All a guise.

1. Silicone Wristband/bangles – #nojudgment but I’m totally hipster and don’t own enough of these from various retail outlets and charitable organisations. The next-level wristband action would be quotable messages from books and/or apparent designs from them. It’s really the only thing I wear aside from a watch that counts as an accessory.

[Top Ten Tuesday] – #15 – Top Ten Unique Books I Haven’t Read

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. I thought this would be a fun way to share a condensed version of potential rambles and thoughts that I have.

This Week’s Theme:
Top Ten Unique Books
I Haven’t Read

Initial Thoughts:

Unique books are quite the dime a dozen. While it could encompass profound or poorly written novels, uniqueness is really all about perspective. But instead of focusing on unique books which I’ve read and can knock heads with you about, I think I’ll throw out some books that are unique to me that I haven’t (and will eventually in the long haul) read. In this sense, I’m regarding uniqueness based on face-value from the synopsis/cover alone (for the most part anyways) and hope to share some of my initial thoughts on potentially unique reads. Sharing is caring, right?

1. Rick Yancey – The Infinite Seasthe infinite sea- rick yancey

Hook: How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.

First off: cover, you so pretty.

I generally liked the first installment (The 5th Wave) and am eagerly waiting for the follow-up. What I appreciated the most about the narrative in particular was its multifaceted storytelling through multiple perspectives (count em: four) to the point where I actually tangibly cared (well…maybe save for one of them) for each outcome.

2. Patrick Ness – The Knife of Never Letting Go

knife of never letting go - ness (cover)Hook: Prentisstown isn’t like other towns. Everyone can hear everyone else’s thoughts in an overwhelming, never-ending stream of Noise. Just a month away from the birthday that will make him a man, Todd and his dog, Manchee — whose thoughts Todd can hear too, whether he wants to or not — stumble upon an area of complete silence. They find that in a town where privacy is impossible, something terrible has been hidden — a secret so awful that Todd and Manchee must run for their lives.

So I keep saying I’ll read this and yet I haven’t gotten to it – I’m clearly sucking at this reading thing. Otherwise, this trilogy sounds so rad and my kind of craziness.
