Initial Thoughts:

Unique books are quite the dime a dozen. While it could encompass profound or poorly written novels, uniqueness is really all about perspective. But instead of focusing on unique books which I’ve read and can knock heads with you about, I think I’ll throw out some books that are unique to me that I haven’t (and will eventually in the long haul) read. In this sense, I’m regarding uniqueness based on face-value from the synopsis/cover alone (for the most part anyways) and hope to share some of my initial thoughts on potentially unique reads. Sharing is caring, right?

1. Rick Yancey – The Infinite Seasthe infinite sea- rick yancey

Hook: How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.

First off: cover, you so pretty.

I generally liked the first installment (The 5th Wave) and am eagerly waiting for the follow-up. What I appreciated the most about the narrative in particular was its multifaceted storytelling through multiple perspectives (count em: four) to the point where I actually tangibly cared (well…maybe save for one of them) for each outcome.

2. Patrick Ness – The Knife of Never Letting Go

Just a month away from the birthday that will make him a man, Todd and his dog, Manchee — whose thoughts Todd can hear too, whether he wants to or not — stumble upon an area of complete silence. They find that in a town where privacy is impossible, something terrible has been hidden — a secret so awful that Todd and Manchee must run for their lives.

So I keep saying I’ll read this and yet I haven’t gotten to it – I’m clearly sucking at this reading thing. Otherwise, this trilogy sounds so rad and my kind of craziness.

[Top Ten Tuesday] – #14 – Top Ten Gateway Books In My Reading Journey

Initial Thoughts:

So April Fools, right? I had this thought of throwing off readers by stirring the pot and delving into choices that would sound absurd as a gateway book…but I can’t make cookie cutter judgments without reading the novels that I’d likely nominate. Alas, another run of the mill list will be produced. But more importantly, this journey of a list is more of a throwback and overall progression of gateway books corresponding to a particular age group. The books listed are in no particular order in each category and link up to their respective Goodreads sites.

1. Jean Marzollo – I Spy

The gateway book of all gateway books. A picture book with stellar one liners that could keep me occupied for several minutes (or longer). This is literally your average child’s treasure trove of reading during library period (if you had this at your school). I remember there were only a few copies available and no one would share…

2. Roald Dahl’s BFG & Dr. Seuss’s Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

I didn’t particularly read a lot either author to begin with but I do remember these two in particular (and the old-school Lorax movie). You can’t be at fault for picking up any of Dahl’s or Seuss’ books. Literally, just grab one and enjoy.

[Top Ten Tuesday] – #13 – Top Ten Things On My Bookish Bucket List

My Bookish Bucket List

Initial Thoughts:

When approaching this week’s topic (like I do for every week’s theme) I asked myself “hey self, how can you change it up this week to make it more interesting and less of an information overload?” And unfortunately, I don’t have a solid answer to that because all I do is roll my face over my keyboard and rambles are created. So no, you and I will just have to suffer through another week of my longwinded points. The struggle is indeed real.

The Near Future

1. Invest in an eReader.

I either read with my wannabe brick smart phone or I lug around my ten-pound gaming laptop (which is also an excessive power drain) when I want to read electronic books. It is fair to say that I am an idiot considering the opportunity cost and utility derived is certainly great.

2. Join and/or create a book club.

Though it’s likely going to be the former, I need to get myself into some of these for the sake of a rich meaningful discussion. But dude, there’s so many of these online ones that makes it daunting to select one – I wouldn’t even know where to start. I am certainly open for suggestions!

The Distant Future

3. Attend the 2014 Toronto International Book Fair, Book Expo America, or equivalent.

Conventions can be plenty fun. I’ve only attended and cosplayed at anime/comic conventions (#nojudgment) but I’d imagine that they’re generally the same type of thing.
