Music Monday is a weekly meme hosted by the Total Book Geek. The purpose of this bookish variant is to match a book with a particular song; whether it is character defining, a narrative element, or just an overall book defining track.
So why am I doing this? Well if I had to choose to only have one of the five traditional senses, it would be sound perception above all else. And hey I think it’d be neat to share music I listen to on a daily basis!
This Week’s Song:
Warriors – Imagine Dragons
In Real Life – Lawrence Tabak
This is a companion post to the review of review of In Real Life by Lawrence Tabak. If you haven’t read the book, it basically involves the online gaming community, reaching dreams, and combating the realities of culture shock in a foreign landscape.
So it’s exceptionally fitting that I choose this song, Warriors by Imagine Dragons, as it was crafted alongside Riot Games as the anthemic track for the 2014 League of Legends World Championship. The visual look of the video is pretty cool too and being paired with the music creates for some stellar narrative of what you’d expect in gaming.
Though the basic meaning can be applied in any competitive environment, the significance is grounded in being the different kind of individual who can still make an impact on the world. That despite continual undue hardship and the need to forever prove your worth, your dreams; sacrificed from the opportunity cost of time otherwise spent perhaps on other fun or enriching things, are the fundamental building blocks of what makes greats great. It is in knowing that everyone starts somewhere at their own time and are warriors in their own right. They fight for what they want out of life and use their actions and beliefs to propel them through harsh, critical judgments of character. But the underlying idea is that difference, should be positively embraced for the change it hopes to create. Professional gaming or not, these individuals are playing the same game of life as everyone else. So watch out for these warriors as they are already here—their mark waiting to be made.
Excerpt from Dark:
As a child,
And watch from far away,
But you always knew that you’d be the one
That worked while they all played.
In youth, you’d lay
Awake at night and scheme,
Of all the things that you would change
But it was just a dream.
Here, we are,
Don’t turn away, now
We are the warriors that built this town!
Here we are,
Don’t turn away, now
We are the Warriors that built this town, from dust!
The time will come when you’ll have to rise
Above the best and prove yourself
Your spirit never dies.
Farewell, I’ve gone to take my throne above
But don’t weep for me,
cause this will be the labor of my love.
It’s been a while since I posted an accompanying track to a novel. But bam—there you have it. Happy listening!
