[Miscellaneous] – The Very Inspiring Blogger Award

Miscellaneous is the tagline to store my random posts that don’t really belong elsewhere. It’s more for consistency sake so I can have an itty-bitty picture to follow suit with the post.

What’s Miscellaneous and Random Today?

Initial Thoughts:

The Very Inspiring Blogger Award has been making noticeable rounds in the community (or the miniscule community that I know of at least) recently and people are apparently inspired by my words (or bloggers just ran out of nominees and if so: THEN I BEAT THE SYSTEM). Either way, I will continue to laugh at the thought of being inspirational. But first and foremost, I’d like to thank these people for nominating me for said award:

If you thought I was inspirational, well… shit, you better go check them out instead because they inspire…my inspiring…to inspire…?—that’s trippy.

The Facts

Now here’s where I’m supposed to tell you 7 things about how to live life on the edge as an inspirational...ist. And since I don’t curate content that often (suffice to say I don’t have regular scheduled posts to qualify for this award—re: beat the system comment), let’s buff this post up so you can learn more about this boymanthing behind thoughts and afterthoughts. So as a matter of bonus, let’s narrow (or expand?) these 7 facts to somewhat fit the category of the five main senses: sight, hear, taste, smell, touch – because I can…and because you, the reader, apparently find enjoyment in my keyboard smashing…

[Top Ten Tuesday] – #24 – Top Ten Book Cover Trends

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. I thought this would be a fun way to share a condensed version of potential rambles and thoughts that I have.

This Week’s Theme:
Top Ten Book Cover Trends

Initial Thoughts:

As the initial point of contact, a book cover doesn’t necessarily have to tell you what the book is going to be about any more than it should supplement the synopsis in doing so. But sometimes it gets perplexing when we start to form judgments based on simply the face value of the cover. Here are some trends I’ve noticed spread across the genres. I thought about including the book covers that would fit these categories…but decided against it. In doing this, I hope that when you read the trend being listed, you can conjure up book covers that you’ve personally come across and can relate to it even more.

Feel free to hit me up with notable culprits of these trends in the comments below!

The-side-or-back-profile-of-the-main-couple-where-you-don’t-really-see-their-faces-but-it-appears-as-though-they’re-romantically-involved

Pretty sure the genre most guilty of this is YA contemporary romance. At least for these no-face pictures, you can basically plug-and-play your favourite face into the character and live out whoever you think it might be. But it seems kind of cookie-cutter to me where it’s almost set in stone that the couple on the cover (using the synopsis as a guideline) is the be-all-end-all. So it’s almost as if you’ve read the ending (because potential happily-ever-after shipping is the most important trope, right?) and then you’re basically backtracking to the front to view the spectacle of drama leading up to it. Though, these are just my thoughts considering I don’t read too many YA contemporary.

[Review] Proxy – Alex London

Book Title:                      Proxy (Proxy Series #01)
Author:                             Alex London
Number of pages:      384

Synopsis:

proxy coverKnox was born into one of the City’s wealthiest families. A Patron, he has everything a boy could possibly want—the latest tech, the coolest clothes, and a Proxy to take all his punishments. When Knox breaks a vase, Syd is beaten. When Knox plays a practical joke, Syd is forced to haul rocks. And when Knox crashes a car, killing one of his friends, Syd is branded and sentenced to death.

Syd is a Proxy. His life is not his own.

Then again, neither is Knox’s. Knox and Syd have more in common than either would guess. So when Knox and Syd realize that the only way to beat the system is to save each other, they flee. Yet Knox’s father is no ordinary Patron, and Syd is no ordinary Proxy. The ensuing cross-country chase will uncover a secret society of rebels, test both boys’ resolve, and shine a blinding light onto a world of those who owe and those who pay. Some debts, it turns out, cannot be repaid.

(re: Goodreads @ Proxy by Alex London)

Should this book be picked up? the tl;dr spoiler-less review:
  • Message-oriented with social/economic themes that are basically the plot drivers.
  • The characters (although not fleshed out extremely well) tick the boxes from diverse to cliché (incl. an LGBTQ protagonist, a cause-girl, and rich people being rich). There’s also lots of friendship.
  • Narrative is fast-paced with alternating POVs spanning only a few days in time and should make for a quick read.
Initial Thoughts

Has a concept like Proxy been written before in literature or television? I feel like it’s been done before but I’m not quite sure…it feels very familiar but I can’t seem to think of what it could be related to. I’m flabbergasted.

Onward to my confusing thought train.

Disclaimer: Potential spoilers inherent to this review from here onward.
