[Awards/Tags] — 2016 Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag

Awards/Tags is the tagline to store random posts that don’t really belong elsewhere. They may involve tags, awards, challenges, and other book blogging nonsense.

Mid-Year Book Freak Tag

I feel like I was tagged to do this last year but it never came up in my drafting queue to actually write it up — and now I am too lazy to recheck who tagged me then but that’s okay.

Thanks for tagging me Jess @ Princessica of Books!

1. Best book read in 2016 so far?

This is as of mid June 2016. There haven’t been significant changes since. STILL TRAVERSING THOSE FUCKING MOUNTAINS THOUGH. UP AND DOWN AND UP AND DOWN.

But if I had to choose one book with staying power, it might actually be Jennifer Nielsen’s The False Prince. Or maybe this is because I really want to continue reading the series (but I just don’t own the rest???)

2. Best sequel read in 2016 so far?

Hands down A Gathering of Shadows by Victoria Schwab. I already loved the world prior-to reading it but the whole Avatar: The Last Airbender pro-bending ish competition was incredibly fun to follow.

3. New releases you haven’t read, but want to:

The Star Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi: I just want to finish this already. I stopped reading it at Part 2 (three months ago) and haven’t continued since LOL…

4. Most anticipated releases for second half of the year?

Two titles I already have and are excited to read is Kevin Sands’ Mark of the Plague and Erin Summerill’s Ever The Hunted — both of which I will be trying to read during next month’s ARC August!

5. Biggest disappointment?

This reading year has been so shit with hype and sequels. Calamity (Sanderson) was terrible. The Last Star (Yancey) was terrible. The Crown’s Game (Skye) was terrible. Glass Sword (Aveyard) was terrible. Everything is just so terrible.

6. Biggest surprise?

The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner.

Here’s the thing: I was low key really excited to read this book but the feeling was inexplicable. I couldn’t tell you why I was so drawn to this contemporary story (note: I don’t actively reach for contemporary reads). So when I read it and felt this overwhelming satisfaction of joy from being graced with the Quiet YA prose in the story, well, that’s why it deserves the surprise title.

7. Favourite new author (debut or new to you)?

It’s a tie between Jeff Zentner with his solid tweets or the fact that I was live-messaging Simon Curtis as I read Boy Robot. So fun!

8. Newest fictional crush?

No one. Everyone has been pretty garbage this year.

9. Newest favourite character?

Alucard Emery from A Gathering of Shadows? Or maybe Sage from The False Prince. They’re both incredibly gray by design.

10. Book that made you cry?

HEART OF STEEL (for now, I feel like Mark of the Plague will make me cry because pigeon feels. I’m serious too).

11. Book that made you happy?

Tell Me Three Things by Julie Buxbaum. It’s not the most hard hitting YA Contemporary Romance but it was a romp of snark in the early chapters that made it incredible engrossing to read.

12. Most beautiful book you’ve bought (or received) so far this year?

When you receive a highly anticipated title and actually enjoy the book? 10/10 winning.

13. Books you need to read by the end of the year?

All of them.

12. Favourite book community member (blogger, booktuber, bookstagrammer)?

Naming favourites is difficult. You are all wonderful.

  1. I smiled at what you said about The Serpent King, and I was surprised to see what you said about Sanderson, he’s one of your fave authors, isn’t he? That sucks. Your posts are always pick-me-ups, never a bad one. I might do this tag, I can’t remember the last time I did one.

  2. WOAH. You have got to teach me how to embed the IG post. That would be so much more helpful than screen shotting ALL my posts. BUT ANYWAYS. Sorry about all those failed hype reads /:. I read RQ last year and thought it was okay.. I haven’t read GS yet and I’m not sure if I will. bye answer thirteen is me all the way

  3. I might have to adopt “everything is terrible” as my mantra. Hope you don’t mind.

But of course Schwab. I’m saving ADSoM and AGoS for a good week where I have almost nothing to do but lose myself in their perfection. All I’ve read of hers so far was Vicious, and if these are even half as good they’ll surely be instant favorites. 🙂
