[Top Ten Tuesday] – #96 – Book Recommendations From Other Bloggers

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.

This Week’s Theme:
Book Recommendations
From Other Bloggers
(That Aren’t My Usual Cup of Tea)

Initial Thoughts:

I’d sound like a broken record if I were to recommend Federle’s The Great American Whatever, Zentner’s The Serpent King, or any of Ness’ contemporary-ish titles that are, in theory, “outside my comfort zone” — which I’d rather say “aren’t my cup of tea” because comfort zone sounds like I’m discomforted by them…which I’m not.

So instead, I’ll grace you with the lovely recommendations from other bloggers that have a big question mark over them for me personally.

I’ll Give You The Sun – Jandy Nelson

Several Aussie bloggers have flailed over this one. So I do own it now, but like, when will it be read? Not a clue. What I will say is that I’ve heard that it’s a multi-POV story…? And 9/10 times I’ve rated multi-POV stories like a 3.5+ (and you know how stingy I can get with ratings).

Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda – Becky Albertalli

During the week of this book’s release, I read the first chapter in the store but didn’t think much of it. Perhaps I just didn’t give it a fair chance? It’s pretty dope how most readers–and close friends–have really enjoyed this title so keep on keepin’ on.

Maybe Someday – Colleen Hoover

Maybe Someday? Yes, maybe someday.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) or Why Not Me? – Mindy Kaling

Look, I love Kaling and want her to be my best friend but reading her book–a non-fiction book to boot–in my voice lacks that oomph. So maybe this is one of those situations where listening to Mindy Kaling narrate is preferred. (But I suck with audiobooks so lalalala.)

The Infernal Devices – Cassandra Clare

Obligatory TID choice thrown in here. Most probable fate is that I’ll watch Shadowhunters and just stick with that.

Saga – Brian K. Vaughn

This isn’t so much of me not being “into” graphic novels or it being out of my comfort zone (because mangas are definitely in my wheelhouse) but rather due to me waiting for it to finish before I actually start it — much like reading Naruto or Bleach or Fairy Tail back way back when, it’s the wait that’s a killer.

Retellings

There. Are. So. Many. Of. Them.

Throne of Glass – Sarah J. Maas

Everyone and their pet cats have read this series and while I don’t want to rule out the possibility, I have more pressing stories to get to. It’s not that I’m disinterested, it’s that I [probably] have book commitment issues considering the length and the speed to which I read.

All The Bright Places – Jennifer Niven

This was on my radar when it saw light in the community. Then it faded again. Now, with the controversy of Niven’s upcoming release, I’ve heard the buzz for this title again (not to mention the screen adaptation). Let me just defer to the screen adaptation instead.

Jellicoe Road – Melina Marchetta

Let’s do a throwback to a book I mentioned eons ago when I first started this blog. I’ve tried to read this book (the last time being like…a year and half ago?) and nothing clicked. Sorry bout’ it.

Afterthoughts:

Moral of the post: I’m no good at listening to blogger recommendations even from the closest of online buds.

Cheers,
Joey

  1. So, while reading Mindy Kaling’s books you totally hear her voice in your head. I swear. It’s like we’re best friends now!
I really enjoyed Maybe Someday, but I know a lot of people didn’t agree with the characters’ choices in it. It didn’t bother me. If you read it, you MUST listen to the included soundtrack while you read. It adds a lot to it.

  2. But you seriously have to give All The Bright Places a chance! It’s one of my favorite reads of 2015, and, I don’t know about the others out there, but that book made me feel feelings I never knew I was capable of feeling. :—(

  3. Just the fact you put CoHo on this post, even though I can’t get you to like her book, makes me a little happy. I can respect that she’s not for everyone.

  4. I couldn’t finish I’ll Give You the Sun, because of the POV split. One of the pov characters I couldn’t stand. I liked the other, but the second time it switched back, I found I just didn’t care enough to endure the intervening parts.

Kudos to you, actually. I think learning your own tastes well enough to what things are not going to work for you (even when other people love them) is a hugely important part of being a reader. Every book has people who will love it and people who will hate it, and there’s nothing wrong with being in the minority (in either direction).

  5. Jellicoe Road ❤ That book is everything but having said that the first 100 pages are so are hard to get into to but once everything falls into place I found it to be so wonderfully crafted and heartbreaking.

I'll Give You The Sun is another must read. It's just so beautiful.

Now I am glad to know that I am not the only one that hasn't jumped on the Throne of Glass bandwagon. I feel like I could binge read the series when all the books are out and the shipping wars/hype has died down a bit. At the moment I'm on the fence about this series.

  6. There are some books you’ve listed that I would love to tell you to avoid, but if you own them, getting around to reading them might become a problem.

So I’ll just say, Melina Marchetta is an amazing writer, Haven’t read Jellicoe Road but I think you’d enjoy The Lumatere Chronicles written by her, it’s one of my favourites. (oops, just threw another one into the mix)

Saga is brill, get to it. 6th volume is coming out this year in July, not sure if its the last. The storylines great.

Some advice from Brandon Sanderson, I think its relevant for you. I wish I could remember what he said exactly LOL. But what I took from it was, just read the kindle samples or read the first chapter of a book and you’ll know if they’re worth your time.
I think this is something agents do, they only request the first few chapters.

P.S. If its not too much trouble, can you recommend some graphic novels/manga.
