Miscellaneous is the tagline to store random posts that don’t really belong elsewhere. They may involve tags, awards, challenges, and other book blogging nonsense.
What’s Miscellaneous Today?
The Emoji Book Tag
Why hello there –fancy seeing you in these parts of the book blogging/tagging community! Today is the Emoji Book Tag – where you basically pair five most or recently used emojis to books.
A big emoji shout-out to Dimple @ Enthralling Dimple for tagging me!
The Unamused Face
There are so many books that elicit my resting bitch face. This year alone there have been several but I think since I’ve started blogging, the worst offender is still We Were Liars (E. Lockhart). Perhaps it’s because reading while donning several skeptical hats made the reveal incredibly meek at best. And while everyone else seemed to love it…I just couldn’t feel the same way. I still dislike the story and I apologize for nothing.
A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.
The Loudly Crying Face
Has a book make me bawl and ugly cry? No…so this doesn’t really work, but I have teared. Most recently, it was my latest 5-star read (which is really like 4+ or something) in The Blackthorn Key by Kevin Sands and the funny thing is that it wasn’t even halfway through that I was hit by feels. Fucking hell.
“Tell no one what I’ve given you.”
Until he got that cryptic warning, Christopher Rowe was happy, learning how to solve complex codes and puzzles and creating powerful medicines, potions, and weapons as an apprentice to Master Benedict Blackthorn—with maybe an explosion or two along the way.
But when a mysterious cult begins to prey on London’s apothecaries, the trail of murders grows closer and closer to Blackthorn’s shop.
The Flushed Face
Flushed is close to blush aaaannnnd I’m out of ideas. So I will say a book that opened my eyes with a sense of wonder and amazement. For that, I will say Firefight by Brandon Sanderson. Steelheart had a great world in Newcago/Chicago, but somehow I really enjoyed how New Babilar/New York was re-imagined. I can’t describe it to you because it’ll spoil the fun…so just take my word for it.
(I mixed Firefight cover with the Steelheart synopsis because spoils.)
Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics. But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his wills.
Nobody fights the Epics…nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them.
The Face Screaming in Fear
I guess the normal association is being “scared” by moments in a book but I’m going to expand that thought for books that have a gasp-worthy instead and make me elicit an overwhelming “OH SHIT” reaction — yes, I’m sure you know those well too — “Vroom vroom” is all I shall say courtesy of More Than This (Patrick Ness)
A boy drowns, desperate and alone in his final moments. He dies.
Then he wakes, naked and bruised and thirsty, but alive.
How can this be? And what is this strange deserted place?
As he struggles to understand what is happening, the boy dares to hope. Might this not be the end? Might there be more to this life, or perhaps this afterlife?
The Smirking Face
“Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye starts playing in your head, right? Me too. I think this is my most used emoji for reasons of it being a) up to no good, b) totally unassuming, and c) it’s totally a sly judgmental face (I totally judge everything and everything). However, the bookish meaning is totally when they’re enjoying their sexy times. Elle Kennedy’s The Deal stands strong for using this emoji…although retrospectively, it’s kind of weird that you’re basically watching literary porn unfold, no?But I guess there’s a market for everything.
Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she’s carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush’s attention, she’ll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice… even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date.
(I WOULD LIKE A SPORTS-ORIENTED NA BOOK TO ACTUALLY HAVE SPORTS THO. IS THAT HARD TO ASK?)

Fun fact: my phone is incapable of producing emojis so most of what I use is actually copy and pasted (especially when I’m on the desktop client)…

My phone is the same. :p I don’t mind using colons and brackets except there’s only a few smileys you can make from them. :p

YEAH. Everyone can enjoy their new-age goodness and I’ll revel in those vintage smileys.

Great tag! Was We Were Liars really that bad?
LikeLike
Haha, I’m glad you enjoyed it. As per my dislike for We Were Liars, mine is definitely of the unpopular opinion variety! I guess you should just see for yourself haha.

There’s even an emoji tag. Wut.
Anyways, you must really, really hate We Were Liars for me to see it on this list again XD Thanks for the tag!

Hating on a book is still a form of publicity I guess. It’s only no news that’s really bad news.

I did this one last month I believe, but it was so much fun and I’m sure I have new emoji’s to use. So I will definitely be looking forward to 2.0 version.
Great choices. Thank god you didn’t spoil Firefight! I would have cried puddles of tears.

Who are you blowing kisses to that you need to use it excessively? LOL. THAT’S LIKE A “NETFLIX AND CHILL?” PREDICAMENT.
JUST 1 EPISODE A DAY OF SUITS IS ALL YOU NEED FOR A HAPPIER LIFE. BECAUSE DONNA AND HARVEY.

Too funny! Yet sadly, so true…

My texting voice depends on emojis, so I can’t imagine ever having a phone that’s incapable of using them. 😮

I keep seeing We Were Liars on your hate list. Is it that bad??? LOL Haven’t read it yet but it has the John Green kind of hype so maybe next time. Ahhhh everybody’s talking bout Patrick Ness. Gotta get on that one!! *insert ‘thanks for tagging’ emoji*
LikeLike
It’s definitely an unpopular opinion to dislike We Were Liars but I’m still going to chirp it out forever. Green’s on a whole other playing field but the hype is similar, I guess.
If you need anymore Ness hype, just follow his Twitter. They’re wonderful.

More than this perfectly fits for this emoji, damn. What. a. book.
Thank you so much for tagging me! 😀

There are so many iconic moments Ness has written that elicit 😱 it was difficult to choose. But that moment was where things picked up — after everything that was rather uneventful in pacing early on.

What a fun tag! I’ve read Sanderson’s Firefight too and that series was actually what got me back into reading after a really long non-reading lull. SO EXCITED FOR THE NEXT BOOK! Have you read Mitosis?
LikeLike
That’s awesome! And to some extent, I do empathize with epicly paced novels that bring that excitement into reading again. But when they first rode into New Babilar. Oh my god that scene.
And yes I have read Mitosis — I actually do encourage people to read it before Firefight even if it’s not really that necessary (but context!)

The resting bitch face is definitely one of my favorite emojis to use and I second you on We Were Liars. While I actually didn’t even finish the book.. I was not a fan.
Thanks for the tag!

LOL I definitely call it “resting bitch face” but it’s definitely not labeled as such in the actual emoji listings. And We Were Liars was so short that even though I finished reading it, it still felt like a DNF.
Enjoy!
