Favourite Book Quotes (Part Two)

Initial Thoughts:

I had actually done this topic before two/three years ago (this is more telling of my age in this community than anything else lolol) but i figured I’d try to include newer quotes from recent faves. I shall denote this post as “Part Two” and select more recent quotes from books I’ve read.

“Death must exist for life to have meaning.”

Perhaps it’s my current inclination to feeling mellow that I begin with this seemingly normal quote on death. But, in all of it’s terrifying beauty, death gives purpose to what we do. Or maybe I’m just full of shit, idk.

“Not everyone has to be the Chosen One. Not everyone has to be the guy who saves the world. Most people just have to live their lives the best they can, doing things that are great for them, having great friends, trying to make their lives better, loving people properly. All the while knowing that the world makes no sense but trying to find a way to be happy anyway.” 

– The Rest of Us Just Live Here, Patrick Ness

I am what you folk call…a Patrick Ness stan.

“I sometimes look at my bookshelf now and think about how someday I’m going to die without ever reading a lot of the books there. And one might be life-changingly good and I’ll never know.”

Jeff makes me cry all. the. fucking. time. A wizard. He is a wizard.

– Dear Martin, Nic Stone

Dear Martin is a lot of things, but for me, what’s most impressive is the voice and how real the dialogue continually jabs at you with its dialogue.

Spelled incorrectly on purpose and yet captures bits of my life with ease.

I’m finding that as I get closer to more brittle bones, I have a stronger drive to do things because…why not? One day at a time, right?

A mood. Truly.

To think I could get something like this in a story where bodies are flying left-and-right.

The worst.

Afterthoughts:

I used to post-it the heck out of my books for quotes. I don’t do it as much anymore but I still appreciate the nuance in trying to craft a short-or-long passage with meaning that lifts and makes us think.

  2. You’re not at all close to the brittle bones Joey! Lol! Me on the other hand…yikes. I loved the Silvera quote! All of the ones you selected were stunning and really spoke to me, but Adam’s line really resonated with me the most. I think there’s something to be said for really getting out there and living your life to the fullest. What’s the point otherwise? Right? Idk, I’m just spitballing here.

    1. I definitely agree. I’ve been trying to be better at putting myself in a position to “do things” that I would normally shy away from–because why not, right? If not now, then when? It’s been working out real well for me this month as I’ve had two lifetime worthy highlight moments in March so far.

      1. Love that. If not now, when? This whole year has been like that for me. I don’t do resolutions, but I guess in a weird way “doing” has become mine this year. It’s definitely been working out for me too.

        1. Resolutions just don’t work for me either haha because it’s these “random” opportunities you can’t really plan for that are the ones that I’m most skeptical about that I just say “you know what…to hell with it leggo!”

  6. I genuinely think it would be possible to quote the entirety of The Rest of Us Just Live Here for one of these topics. Every single line is gold! I haven’t read any of the other books on your list but I’ve been planning to read a few of them, and the quote you chose definitely makes me want to prioritise The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue.

And one might be life-changingly good and I’ll never know.”——-THIS! legit crosses my mind every few days *for shame * smh especially at the end of the month when i’m taking my book haul pics lol. & The Adam Silvera quote is one of my all time faves, that book was DEEEEP! great picks 🙂

The unfortunate thing is that no matter how much I ponder the books on my shelf of not being read, I somehow find myself reverting back to spending countless hours on the weird side of YouTube and neglecting reading haha oops. Adam Silvera just seems to have a way of provoking emotions out of us with simple yet poignant words!

  11. I love your choices so, so much and that Dear Martin quote is brilliant and beautiful, I love it. I need to read the book as soon as I can 🙂 and YES to that Eliza and Her Monsters quote. I loved that book and that is like, my mood a whole lot of the time haha. Lovely post! 🙂

    1. I don’t usually push books super hard on people but YES YOU MUST READ DEAR MARTIN, MARIE.

      I think what I appreciated a lot with Eliza is how…real the predicament felt to me. It’s basically this conversation we’re having now…in book form. Omg so meta.

    1. Gentleman’s Guide was surprisingly enjoyable for me as I’m not huge on Historical Fiction! I am very excited for Lady’s Guide because Felicity was spectacular in Gentleman’s and I’m curious as to what her journey will be like. (I’m also OK for there to be Monty/Percy cameos haha).
