Initial Thoughts:

Let me proceed to list all the books with wonderful covers that I will never get a chance to read because I am utterly shit at this reading thing.

Release (Patrick Ness)


Truth be told, I am probably going to order this online pretty soon because there is no reason why I cannot have every version of this since I am collecting all of his books anyways. Not to mention that I cannot wait for the NA version like seriously why is there such a large gap in timing fuuuuuuuuuuuuuh.

But uh, spring forest-y goodness or some shit I don’t know?

The Traitor’s Kiss (Erin Beaty)

Gather around, for I have a non-story to tell. I requested this book at a time when there was zilch about it. Now, everyone has thrown the kitchen sink at this and I am in half dazed state of straddling the line of reading obligations. 83.7% of people I know have hated this book. That’s fun. But if I have not learned my lesson from my glowing 1-star review of Carve the Mark, I should actually not read it. …but the Canadian in me cannot deny the pull of reading obligations. Oh fuck me.

Spring is flowers!

Once and For All
(Sarah Dessen)

I know many who are h y p e d for this title but little ol’ me is meh at it. Unlike books that I know I’d dislike by the merit of bad writing etc., I just don’t know if I’d fully commit to enjoying a full on contemporary romp (see: I am reading I Believe in a Thing Called Love right now and totally irked lmao).

More flower nonsense.

Grit (Gillian French)

This is honestly more of a reminder for me to read this book as I am probably due for a darker contemporary story (?) after my frolic through months of [generally] happy YA contemporaries.

Spring/Summer is surely under the same umbrella was being immersed in water or a lake or the tears of yours truly.

Duke of Bannerman Prep (Katie Nelson)

Ah yes, a YA retelling of Great Gatsby, basically, and the cover itself epitomizes the slow shift into Spring/Summer goodness of just chilling under the setting sun. If I’m being honest, while I think I’d be game for all the bromantic goodness, part of me thinks I’d be irked at a lot of the things that take place in this story mainly because I wasn’t the fondest of Gatsby’s shenanigans.


The Unlikelies (Carrie Firestone)

All I have to say is that this cover lowkey reminds me of Love and Gelato (for which I have also not read…but what’s new?). Part of me is also sold by this book (even if I just learned of this title like not even 2 minutes ago LOL. That Breakfast Club comparable gets me every time, damnit.

Sad thing is that although this book cover might encourage people to pick up that cold dessert on a warm day, I am on team most-desserts-of-the-milk-variety-is-no-good-for-me-because-they-make-me-implode.

Eliza and Her Monsters (Francesca Zappia)

You may think this is an odd choice, but, I have a fair reason for this to fit Spring. Historically, I used to venture with friends to Anime North (a yearly anime convention in Toronto — yes, I cosplayed, but that’s besides the point here). This point in Spring was always at the height of spring. So, of course, with Eliza being about fandoms, I am reminded of the shenanigans at conventions.

Afterthoughts:

Fall is still better than Spring.

  4. Haha well one book on this list you’ll read – or already have read?! for sure will be that Patrick Ness book ahah 🙂 I can’t WAIT to read that oneeeeeeee I am so excited and that cover is SO beautiful.

    1. I am very tempted to place an order for the UK edition of Ness because I need to hoard them all anyways. I was also asked by a bookseller if I had received the NA arc (I haven’t) and they told me to contact them again if the pub doesn’t send it to me. omg the temptation to just grabby hands that copyyyyyy

  5. I really do like the cover of The Traitor’s Kiss and it’s something I would totally buy on a whim if I hadn’t already read reviews too haha! Ooh I haven’t heard of The Duke of Bannerman Prep (and I’m not a Gatsby fan) but that cover!!!! The Unlikelies cover is so fun, very spring/summery. Good choices!

    1. Precisely this! I had requested it with the intent of bookstagramming the cover and there wasn’t much about this book that was out there (although the edition I was sent was grey/black with a “cover not final” logo — so that was disappointing). Then I saw the comments and….y i k e s, is all I can say.

  6. I don’t know, you might enjoy Once and For All. Sarah Dessen is a YA contemporary master. I’ve loved every one of her books. I’m not really a Carrie Firestone fan, but I have to admit the whole Breakfast Club thing had me wanting to read that one, too.

  7. Feel like I’m walking into an echo chamber here, but The Traitor’s Kiss truly has a gorgeous cover and the fact the story sucks totally blows. Digging the theme, hopefully we get to do a fall-themed one when autumn rolls around because I agree that it is the superior season (and likely has better options to pick from!) Great list anyway 🙂

  8. I SO SO SO want to read the new Patrick Ness book, but I am actually still undecided about which cover I am going to get. I like both the US and the UK one and that always has me so undecided.

    The Traitor’s Kiss cover is pretty amazing.
    I love book covers with ice cream on the cover for some reason. Probably because I really love ice cream, to be honest. I’ve been looking up cool ice cream shops in NYC lol. I seen one where you can get cotton candy sculpture things on top of your ice cream. I was sent an ARC of The Unlikelies and I’m pretty stoked.
    I am dying to get my hands on Eliza and Her Monsters. I loved Zappia’s first book, which also had a pretty awesome book cover.

      1. Hahah own those two books too. Might have bought Love & Gelato for the ice cream cover. We don’t really have a plan for NYC either. We have a hotel and that’s about it. We’re driving to Washington D.C. and then supposed to get bus tickets to take us to NYC for the weekend lol. But we haven’t figured that out yet with getting tickets. As for what to do there, not really sure yet either. Just gonna wing it lol.
