This Week’s Theme:
2017 Releases I’m Excited For
(First Half of Year)

Initial Thoughts:

How the fuck are we at 2017 already? I’m still not done my reading commitments for last year, damnit. Anyways, this list will include titles that are on my TBR for obvious reasons of reading commitment or I just HAVE to read it.

Windwitch (Jan 10, 2017)

windwitch-susan-dennardI had issues with Truthwitch. It just wasn’t as fully realized as it could have been and it was too Avatar for me for it to be “new” and “exciting”. Here’s hoping this changes that.

…a shadow man haunts the Nubrevnan streets, leaving corpses in his wake—and then raising those corpses from the dead. Windwitch continues the tale of Merik—cunning privateer, prince, and windwitch.

Caraval (Jan 31, 2017)

Please don’t fail me. Please don’t fail me. Please don’t– fuck.

caraval-stephanie-garberScarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.

The Edge of Everything (Jan 31, 2017)

the-edge-of-everything-jeff-giles…on a terrifying sub-zero, blizzardy night in Montana, she and her brother are brutally attacked in a cabin in the woods–only to be rescued by a mysterious bounty hunter they call X.

X is no ordinary bounty hunter. He is from a hell called the Lowlands, sent to claim the soul of Zoe’s evil attacker and others like him.

King’s Cage (Feb 7, 2017)

kings-cage-victoria-aveyard-book-coverTo be fair, even if Red Queen and Glass Sword had problems (re: glowing 2 star reviews), I am curious as to where Maven goes per character development.

In this breathless third installment to Victoria Aveyard’s bestselling Red Queen series, allegiances are tested on every side. And when the Lightning Girl’s spark is gone, who will light the way for the rebellion?

A Conjuring of Light (Feb 21, 2017)

a-conjuring-of-light-schwab-book-coverOh.

My.

God.

“…The battle between four magical Londons comes to a head in this stunning finale…”

It’s not even the BLURB and I am excited. What is wrong with me?

Goodbye Days (Mar 7, 2017)

Most anticipated contemporary first half of 2017 full stop.

goodbye-days-jeff-zentnerCarver Briggs never thought a simple text would cause a fatal crash, killing his three best friends, Mars, Eli, and Blake. Now Carver can’t stop blaming himself for the accident and even worse, there could be a criminal investigation into the deaths. Then Blake’s grandmother asks Carver to remember her grandson with a ‘goodbye day’ together… …but not everyone is willing to forgive.

The Inexplicable Logic of my Life (Mar 7, 2017)

I must be the only one in the world who thought this was the [second] re: follow-up book to Aristotle and Dante. It isn’t LOL. That’s an entirely different book.

the-inexplicable-logic-of-my-life-benjamin-alire-saenz-book-coverSal used to know his place with his adoptive gay father, their loving Mexican-American family, and his best friend, Samantha. But it’s senior year, and suddenly Sal is throwing punches, questioning everything, and realizing he no longer knows himself. If Sal’s not who he thought he was, who is he?

The Gauntlet (March 28, 2017)

Middle. Eastern. Jumanji. Fuck yeah.

the-gauntlet-karuna-riaziWhen twelve-year-old Farah and her two best friends get sucked into a mechanical board game called The Gauntlet of Blood and Sand—a puzzle game akin to a large Rubik’s cube—they know it’s up to them to defeat the game’s diabolical architect in order to save themselves and those who are trapped inside, including her baby brother Ahmed. But first they have to figure out how.

Bang (April 18, 2017)

bang-barry-lyga-book-cover I Hunt Killers was so great that I’m curious to see Lyga in a contemporary capacity!

A chunk of old memory, adrift in a pool of blood.
Sebastian Cody did something horrible, something no one–not even Sebastian himself–can forgive. At the age of four, he accidentally shot and killed his infant sister with his father’s gun.

Noteworthy  (May 2, 2017)

Hello.

noteworthy-riley-redgateIt’s the start of Jordan Sun’s junior year at the Kensington-Blaine Boarding School for the Performing Arts. Unfortunately, she’s an Alto 2, which—in the musical theatre world—is sort of like being a vulture in the wild: She has a spot in the ecosystem, but nobody’s falling over themselves to express their appreciation. So it’s no surprise when she gets shut out of the fall musical for the third year straight.

Then the school gets a mass email: A spot has opened up in the Sharpshooters, Kensington’s elite a cappella octet. Worshiped … revered … all male.

The Love Interest (May 16, 2017)

IMAGINE THAT: A BOOK ABOUT TROPES.

the-love-interest-cale-dietrichThere is a secret organization that cultivates teenage spies. The agents are called Love Interests because getting close to people destined for great power means getting valuable secrets. Caden is a Nice: The boy next door, sculpted to physical perfection. Dylan is a Bad: The brooding, dark-souled guy, and dangerously handsome. The girl they are competing for is important to the organization, and each boy will pursue her. Will she choose a Nice or the Bad?

What the boys don’t expect are feelings that are outside of their training. Feelings that could kill them both.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue (June 20, 2017)

Not gonna lie. my initial reaction was Kell + Rhy (sans almost incest).

the-gentlemans-guide-to-vice-and-virtueHenry “Monty” Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman, but he was never one to be tamed. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven’t been able to curb any of his roguish passions—not for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men.

But as Monty embarks on his grand tour of Europe, his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice is in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy

  1. Caraval, Edge of Everything, Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, and A Conjuring of Light are all on my list! I seriously am in awe of the covers for the Shades of Magic trilogy. They’re just too damn beautiful!

  2. What a FANTASTIC list, Joey, you just summed up the books I need to read in 2017 as well. And nothing wrong with being excited about A Conjuring of Light, my brain is going crazy just thinking about this. Can’t imagine our state of mind once we’ll hold it in our hands and read the first words.
Also, agree with you on King’s Cage. I still don’t know if I really want to read it (like you, I had issues with Glass Sword), but…part of me needs to know where all this goes.

  3. Bang, YES! I am really excited about Lyga’s new book. It made my list too. You’re not the only one, by the way…I was pretty stoked about The Inexplicable Logic of my Life because I was like “more ARI AND DANTE!!” And now I’m like “oh.”… I still really want to read it though!

  4. Ooh The Edge of Everything is definitely one that has been on my radar. I hope these books live up to your expectations.

  5. Goodbye Days is definitely my most anticipated contemporary. I’m not huge on that genre but I absolutely loved The Serpent King so I’m looking forward to what Zentner comes up with next.
