Movie Review –
Fantastic Beasts and
Where To Find Them (2016)
Genre: Fantasy, Adventure, Action
Duration: 133 Minutes
Directed By: David Yates
Screenplay By: J.K. Rowling
Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Colin Farrell
The adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards seventy years before Harry Potter reads his book in school.
Reaction
Newt Scamander is the hero I needed 15 years ago. Harry’s alright…but Newt takes the cake for me.
“But Joey” you begin, “he [Newt] made so many stupid decisions!“
Yes, you would be correct. If all it took was a thin fucking piece of twine to “stop” the beasts from escaping the briefcase, then you would be right: Newt is the biggest troll (thus far) in this new franchise. But through all of the incredibly bad decision making, there’s something there–something immaculately Canadian Hufflepuff as to how Newt carries himself that resonates so profoundly with me.
At least people aren’t necessarily dying because of him unlike Boy Wonder over there with the lightning scar…
Also great sleight of hand to one of the twists in terms of a storytelling perspective. Skepticism might bring you closer to the twist but it doesn’t really dilute the overall story.
Also the comic relief 10/10 would be best friends with them.
Casting
Though Redmayne really does sell the awkward quirk that comes with Newt, I could not help but think that his role is like a reprisal of Stephen Hawking re: The Theory of Everything. I think it’s just the personality that’s quite similar between the two. Maybe.
But aside from Redmayne, I can’t even begin to pick apart the acting because I was legit just enjoying my time being back in this world.
Afterthoughts
The best thing about this film is simply being able to step back into this magical world. Full stop.
Cheers,
Joey

I enjoyed this movie as well and I’m excited to see where the story goes. I wonder if the attraction is that they’re all adults. Yay Hufflepuffs!

It’s probably smart on them to cash in on an adult-driven film to not only get the existing audience but works to the chronological development of the story itself. But also because Hufflepuffs.

I really loved the movie, too! It was a nice treat seeing a different version of the Wizarding World and people who actually know how to use their magic, instead of just learning. What you said about Harry is hilarious! HA! It’s so true, though. So many people died for him that it was getting ridiculous. I loved Eddie’s portrayal of Newt. This was the first movie I’ve seen him in and I definitely want to check out the rest. The character of Jacob sold it for me, though! He was hilarious.

Yeah! The application of the magic as a seamless thing (as opposed to fight-or-flight scenes) was really neat to witness! Although I know many people who didn’t like The Theory of Everything, I quite enjoyed it and it’s one that got him a Golden Globe (if that matters).

I still want to watch The Theory of Everything eventually, as well as The Danish Girl. I mean he won the Oscar for TToE so it couldn’t have been that** bad lol They both sound very interesting.

Yeah, I was definitely surprised with the humour in this one. As I don’t remember laughing (as much) during the HP franchise.

It’s fun and definitely best when it’s not paying too close attention to its plot. Nice review.

As it seems to be with many films, haha.

Oh I agree, the greatest thing about this was to step back into this magical world. And I loved Newt’s awkwardness ❤

LOL Canadian.
Honestly I was really skeptical of this being at least 4 movies or whatever, but now that I’ve watched it, I WANT MORE

I finally watched it and I’m so glad that I did because I loved Newt’s character so much! I wouldn’t call his quirks Hufflepuffian though seeing as I’m a Hufflepuff 😛
