We’re all complicit in this dangerous game of “Who Can Stack The Tallest TBR” as we’re all shouting recommendations right, left, and center. But all you enablers are wonderful people…even if my credit card weeps.
Throne of Glass (Maas)
I told myself I wouldn’t read it…then I read Liam @ Hey Ashers! glorious chapter-by-chapter critique (see: they’re hilarious) and I decided I may hate read this one day. Also encouraged because I was gifted the first three paperbacks in the UK edition (which is so much nicer, imo, than the NA counterpart).
The Winner’s Curse (Rutkoski)
I have this book by proxy of people talking about the polarizing opinions of being on camp “so good” or “wtf was this book”. I’m not even crazy about this premise either (?) but I guess we shall see….
Anything by Colleen Hoover
Look here: I tried to read one of her books and it didn’t work. Perhaps I just chose the wrong one but nothing about that book enthralled me. No, instead it was a rife with “wtf-is-this-shit?” Or maybe rom-coms in the written form fool me into thinking it’s good (because I do often enjoy a good rom-com in film version) only to be terrible.
I’ll Give You The Sun (Nelson)
lol I don’t think I will ever get around to this. I can’t even make him because of reading obligations oh my. But I can legitimately name 10+ people off the top of my head that have sung the praises for this book.
I Hunt Killers (Lyga)
As much as I wanted to read this (on my own TBR adding prowess), there are members in this community who have given this their vote of confidence. Plus, I am preparing for a series binge of this in November — so if you would like to join me, by all means.
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown (Black)
The hardcover connoisseur in me saw that this book was cheap. Then I talked to someone and was inadvertently enabled to pick this up for like… $3.49 Canadian or something. Which is basically like a day of coffee…
Armada (Cline)
The common opinion I’ve heard is that Ready Player One is the stronger of the two. That’s cool. But I think I play enough video games and experienced Sword Art Online etc., for me to really enjoy that story. (Or maybe I just tell myself that?) Either way, this book is on my TBR just so I can say I’ve read something by Cline…? Can’t say when I’ll get to it though.
The Night Circus (Morgenstern)
This came recommended to me from a close friend but I don’t know how I’d feel about reading this book if this book set the precedent for being compared to for The Crown’s Game; which, in my opinion, was a mess.
The Luminaries (Catton)
This recommendation came when I was a wee little blogger. I wasn’t much into “fiction” fiction (like award winning pedigree stuff) but some individuals commented on how timeless this book is. Then, I happened across the hardcover of this at a libary sale ($3!) and I remembered the praise I heard for it. In hindsight, I should have probably checked Goodreads before to see what it was about…
Afterthoughts:
Thankfully, I’m not buying most of these books for full price when hauled so my credit card isn’t crying too too much.

I honestly do not doubt this at all. COUNT EM DOWN, ASH. THREE WEEKS BEFORE I WILL BINGE THE SERIES. AS PROMISED.

I haven’t read The Crown’s Game yet, but The Night Circus is nothing short of completely fantastic. It’s my favorite book of all time, and I’ve never read anything else like it. (I also haven’t ever seen it compared to The Crown’s Game, but maybe I will pick that up just to see how accurate it is…)

Eeeek. I think it’s really only the “magical duel” aspect that’s the comparison. I wouldn’t know though haha. But since I already do own The Night Circus, it’s just a matter of me actually picking it up!

I’ve not read the Crown’s Game but I can tell you that The Night Circus was fabulously magical, so you can add me to that recommended list haha.
I still can’t see myself picking up the Throne of Glass series and it only sits on my tbr pile to keep people happy. 😛

IMO. TCG is a hard pass. But, I’m the black sheep of the community so actually don’t listen to me.
That’s a very passive aggressive move you got there, pretending you’d ever read TOG by having it on your TBR; although, I’m sure I’m actually doing the same thing.

I put off reading The Night Circus for ages because I’d heard it had various problems. I thought it was wonderful. I don’t think I’ve heard of The Crown’s Game before, so no idea how they compare.
I hope you like Armada more than I did. I’ll probably give it a second chance at some point, but I couldn’t get very far into it. I’ve read Ready, Player One twice.

I too have heard both camps of like/dislike for The Night Circus. I’m not particularly drawn to the premise (as of yet) but since I down own it — literally an arm-span away from me — I might have to give the first chapter a go!
The common critique I see is that RPO is a far superior book to Armada haha and I guess seeing that you read it twice, this opinion still stands!

I hate credit card crying haha. But I read The Winner’s Curse and really liked it, but then didn’t like so much the second book. So I don’t know what would happen if I reread it. BUT THE NIGHT CIRCUS. THAT IS SO GOOD.

I just recently finished Ready Player One and I can’t wait to try Armada. And, I recently read The Crown’s Game – The Night Circus was definitely way better.

I have very low standards when comparing any book with similar narrative/story line styles as The Crown’s Game haha. So Night Circus is almost already better without me having read it.
I do hope you enjoy Armada!
