Initial Thoughts:
Today’s prompt is about getting a gift card and what splurges would come out of it. So glad the prompt did not involve a generic prepaid credit card because nothing bookish would come out of those purchases. So lettuce assume that said gift card is from one of the major book retailer worldwide.
Also caveat: has to be currently available for purchase. Somewhere.
A Gathering of Shadows (Schwab)
ADULT SF-F, WHY YOU SO EXPENSIVE? FUCK.
(Thankfully I had the opportunity to borrow the ARC from a Shelly @ Read Sleep Repeat — THANKS, FRIEND!)
BUT I DID ENJOY IT SO LALALALA (also holds the highest rated book that I’ve read in 2016 at 4.5/5. Hype.)
False Hearts (Lam)
ADULT SF-F, WHY YOU SO EXPENSIVE? FUCK. (#2)
(No, but seriously, I really want this. ORPHAN BLACK meets INCEPTION is the comp title and like whoa I need more of both in my life.
Truthwitch (Dennard)
As with ARC reading, I sometimes delay hauling the finished copy for reasons of “I can wait until there’s a sale”. And I do need to get a copy for collections purposes…even if this book was only okay.

The Inquisiton (Matharu)
I finished this book last night and even if it’s not good per se, fucking cliffhangers got me all riled up.
But really, for fantasy newbies, it’s not so bad of a book for that kind of audience. It’s literally a mash up of Pokemon meets Warcraft/World of Warcraft meets Full Metal Alchemist meets Harry Potter meets Lord of the Rings meets Legend of Korra. At least to me.
Chaos Walking (Ness)
For collections sake. The hardcovers are petty difficult to find in solid condition.
On another note, I will probably be pre-ordering the new hardcover edition of A Monster Calls (the movie tie-in edition) because reasons.
The Ascendence Trilogy (Nielsen)
I read The False Prince a few months back and quite enjoyed it (heralding a 4/5 from yours truly). The reason why I couldn’t continue is mainly because I didn’t own Book #2 and onward.
If you’re looking for an MG low-fantasy, look no further than this series. The protagonist is far more grey than so many YA heroes. Shade.
Saga (Vaughn)
It would seem that everyone and their pets have read this graphic novel.
Uprooted (Novak)
ADULT SF-F, WHY YOU SO EXPENSIVE? FUCK. (#3)
(I heard this book is good but slow though so I don’t know but how often is there a solid and fully fleshed out standalone fantasy nowadays?)
Mistborn (Sanderson)
I do already own the trilogy in North American mass market paperback but one does not simply avoid this white and glowing cover UK edition.
I would also settle for the NA Hardcovers though…cause I’m a hardcover snob.
The Winner’s Kiss (Rutkoski)
Have I read it? No.
Will I read it soon? Probably not.
Do I own the first two books in hardcover? You bet.
Good problems to have.

I’m not one to brag but the UK editions of the Mistborn trilogy are a site to behold. Such beauties.
I’m going to echo your sentiment to the ADULT SF-F, WHY YOU SO EXPENSIVE? FUCK because the amount of tears my bank account had shed over these books is ridiculous. However, I must say Uprooted is a good book, the cover alone is stunning and the story is intriguing enough but it is pretty slow and if you can tolerate overly descriptive passages then this book is right up your alley.

But yes, the rising prices are ridiculous. I’m at the point where I’m trying to opt to wait for most books to be discounted (notwithstanding early release discounts) before getting them. BUT. I don’t know which one is better…NA or UK cover of Uprooted? Both.
Although now that you say slowly paced and gorgeous writing, I feel like I might hate it LOL (see: Star Touched Queen).

I can tell that wound still cuts deep. Will I ever be forgiven for committing, or not committing such an act?
Discounts are what I live for and I always end up buying more so technically it equals to what I’d usually spend but I’d get more books so it’s a win. I say get both if you’re that torn.
Ah yes. I can see why you’d have issues with The Star-Touched Queen. I’d say give Uprooted a chance but personally while the story was great and the writing was stunning, some parts were far too overly descriptive.

AGos is on my list, too! And ADSoM because I’m quite behind on V.E. Schwab books (as in I’ve never read any).
And I reeeeeally want to read The Knife of Never Letting Go. I’ve heard it makes people cry? Makes me want to try it more!
Oh, gosh, I’ve also only read the 1st of the Winners trilogy… Shame.
Saga looks really good and fun, so I want to try that, too.

You have plenty of time to catch up on Schwab publications! And if you’re leaning towards ADSOM, then you’re the smart one out of all of us to wait for the third book’s release because cliffhangers are dangerous.
I CRIED IN KNIFE, FULL ON TEAR TRICKLING DOWN MY FACE. By the same merits, I know people who didn’t like it so that’s my two cents.

This is the one benefit of being a hardcover hoarder: I don’t have to pay much mind to NA Romance because they’re all PBs!

Still haven’t gotten my hands on a copy of A Gathering of Shadows much to my dismay. I agree that book prices are sometimes outrageous and my unfortunately empty wallet cannot support them.

I think you’re the real winner for not having read AGOS yet because you’d be able to binge both (assuming you get book 2/3 when the last one releases) and can avoid the painful cliffhanger!

I’ve had The Chaos Walking Trilogy for almost a year now, but I haven’t summoned the strength and interest to actually read them. I only read books when I feel the pull to read them (idk if that made sense. LOL). 🙂
I’ve been intrigued with Mistborn trilogy as well, I’ve heard a lot of good things about it, but I’m afraid that it’s too high fantasy for my liking. 😦

I think one of the comp. titles for Mistborn is like… Avatar: TLA or Full Metal Alchemist? I forget. Either or, I loved both so I really need to get on it haha.

I agree, adult SF-F books are way too expensive! It’s crazy… I really liked Uprooted. I know some people found it too slow or underwhelming, but I really enjoyed it. Like you said, there aren’t that many great SF-F standalones anymore..

I seen Truthwitch on Book Outlet! I love the white Mistborn covers. I NEEEEEED THEM! I also need to finish the series. I only read Mistborn, which was amazing. I had the Chaos Walking books on my list too.

Awesome list you have here! I totally own AGoS, which is a funny story. I got it in a subscription box because I saw that it was a collaboration with V.E. Schwab. At this point in time, I’d never read anything by her but needed this book (also signed by her) in my life for unknown reasons. I read ADSoM and thought it was…OK (which I’m attributing to my Great Slump), As with every physical book I own (at least it feels like) I have yet to pick it up. *sigh* Some day!

While I’d love to be a monthly subscriber to subscription boxes, the cost of shipping is usually a killer for me unfortunately. Although I might try one day just for the experience haha.
I personally enjoyed AGOS a lot more than ADSOM but I guess I’m one to like slower second books that may/may not suffer from second book syndrome haha. But if you’re familiar (and enjoyed) Legend of Korra (re: pro bending), you might enjoy it!

So many of these books are favourites of mine! I really loved A Gathering of Shadows and The Winner’s Kiss, both are all-time favourites of mine so I really hope you love them. I have Uprooted on my to-read list but I’ve heard great things about it so I have high expectations as well.
I only just discovered Taran Matharu’s work but I already got the first two books in his series and I cannot wait to get started on them!

For the Winner’s trilogy in particular, I’ve friends in both camps that enjoyed/hated it and it’s dauntingly polarizing!

Yeah I’ve seen mixed reviews but I am firmly in the camp that loved the series though. And, well, even if it’s a book I didn’t enjoy I would still hope other people love reading it, kind of the whole point isn’t it? 🙂
