Photography effort level: “let’s try to snap an okay image”
I’ve yet to read this book so I have no idea how much music is actually in it. Either way, I kept most of my sheet music from elementary-to-high school (SEE WHAT I DID THERE WITH WHICH SONG I LAYERED ON TOP?) and though I probably won’t play in a wind symphony again, I’m still low key on the hunt for an a cappella group to join LOL with my [only] shower-approved singing skills (which is mediocre at best).

Food

Dillard “Dill” Early is the protagonist in this story. This is not the first time Zentner has convinced me to devour dill-flavoured foods.
Food is wonderful. I used to watch a lot of Food Network television and have now gravitated towards watching cooking videos and food-eating-reaction videos on YouTube.
What books have encouraged you to go devour food?

I played in band in middle school and part of high school. I was a clarinet player. I also played some piano in middle school. It was kind of funny, because they called it “keyboard” class and I was like “yay a computer class I want to take that” and when I get there it was actually keyboard as in musical instrument LMAO!!!

Ah, we had classes called keyboard too but I’m questioning how you thought it was a computer class (wouldn’t that be “computer science then?!” — but then again why would there be a class devoted to simply keyboard skills LOL)

Yay Clarinet! I don’t even remember how to play though. I stopped after 9th grade.
I wasn’t the brightest middle schooler haha! I don’t know why I thought it was a computer class. I thought it was some kind of typing class, so I figured that’s why it was called “keyboard” haha. I never took it again after that LOL!

Emotional books always make me go find food – I think I opened a box of chocolates and sobbed after reading A Thousand Splendid Suns! xD

I wish my high school had a strings program. I’d probably have picked that up instead if possible! You opened the box of chocolates AFTER finishing the book? It wouldn’t even last past the first quarter of the book for me. I’m no good at pacing with food.

I have a love/hate relationship with performing that song because we seemed to play it like once a year for random occasions. But I also thought it was the coolest thing when I was in elementary school and we went to visit the high school for a tour and they were practicing it in class.

I played violin myself for seven years and was in my high school’s symphonic orchestra. I’d like to pick it up again eventually just for something fun to do.
I looove pickle/dill flavored foods. There is a popcorn shop here that sells spicy dill popcorn and it’s amazing. I can’t think of a specific book, but really any book that has detailed descriptions of food will probably make me hungry.

I know the feels of wanting to pick up any instrument if you’ve played it for x years.
You should definitely consider reading The Serpent King then (even if there’s no actual dill flavoured food you’ll be convinced because of the character name).

Like Amber, I played the violin for awhile but didn’t really stick with it. I do love music though, in various forms/genre. BUT FOOD IS FOREVER. YAY for Lays! And OMG I so want to read The Serpent King.

I always feel as though eating Lays is like devouring air LOL as if this chip brand is so thin and not like Doritos or Ruffles etc. in that there’s substance or “bulk” to those varieties. But yay for TSK! I hope you enjoy it if/when you get to it!

I seldom hear about harmonica players (as in, you mainly played harmonica?) so that’s wicked cool!
I ran out of Lays like an hour after I half-assed the picture because I just wanted to devour the bag. They need bigger size after “family” size…

Lays’ like that! It’s like it bewitches you, there’s no way your done until you finish the whole bag, no matter what size it is.
Here in Croati we have only one size – 150g.
Yes, harmonica was my main instrument. I wanted to play piano but came too late when music school registered new students, so I ended up in harmonica class and studied it for 7 years…

That photo of Passenger is gorgeous! I learned how to play the piano and guitar once; neither stuck with me. My music skills are limited to shower-singing and karaoke haha. The Grisha trilogy had quite a bit of mouth-watering description about food, and that really made me want to eat. This post made me realise I have never eaten anything dill-related!

I’m sure if you’ve ever had eaten a pickle in a salad or a burger, you’ve come close to the taste of dill…sort of, not really.

Nice post, Joey! Love the pictures you took. 😉 Passenger did include a little musical aspect (the main character Etta loved to play the violin, plus some other little stuff) but nothing too big, in my opinion. Or maybe I just can’t remember them if there were. 😂 As for a musical instrument I play, I used to take a keyboard class in middle school… But that was kind of the extent of it. Lol.

Ohh, I thought there was more of a musical influence in Passenger! Now I’m dubious as to the point of Etta’s interest if music is rarely touched on in the book LOL because it sounds as if it could be easily replaced with any other thing like crocheting and she’d be the same.
But damn, I wish I had a keyboard class during middle school (then again, I went to elementary school).

Yeah I was expecting a bit more too.. I dunno, it was okay though I guess. The role is music still was important, to an extent but not as much as I’d hoped.
Haha yeah it was pretty fun now that I think of it, though I was never the best at it.. 😂

Wonderful post! I am not musically gifted in any way 😛 I tried the recorder and failed, I tried the guitar and failed, I can’t sing and everything else is just a no go for me – so yeah, non-gifted in the music department.
Now, if you’re looking for a book to make you hungry: Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler. Damn my mouth was watering so much during that book and now thinking back, I have a deep craving for a cupcake – I mean, who knew those little cake things were fancy? I sure didn’t 😉

Perhaps you’re gifted in the musical listening department then (surely that’s a thing somewhere).
I feel like cupcake towers or whatever are the new hipster-y trends of celebrations. Itty bitty cake things are definitely more moist and delicious than most cakes (or maybe I’ve just had bad cakes).

I used to play piano when I was about 10 … and then completely gave up from a mix of lack of interest, and no skill whatsoever. Sometimes I think if I had face palmed the keyboard it would have made a better sound 😛

Have you read Passenger? I totally put Pirates of the Caribbean on top because of the ship on the book cover but that’s as far as I know what happens in the book and it’s proximity to musical themes.

I love your photograph for Passenger! It’s gorgeous. And the book is lovely as well 😉 I was never in a musical group, but I did play the piano growing up. I also sing, and have been training with my husband (who’s an excellent singer). Hope you find a singing group soon! (P.S. Food is always awesome.)
