Movie Review – Sicario (2015)

Reaction

This movie opens up with a scene that’s reminiscent of Criminal Minds shenanigans. Actually, the entire movie felt like one long episode aptly named Sicario (meaning: hitman); taking a peak at the underbelly of Mexican cartels. While I can’t speak to the realism versus sensationalist subtext, the fact that it raises eyebrows is surely enough. I hope?

The exposition at the beginning was kinda shaky for me (I’m not even sure what I mean by that) but this wavering uncertainty gains traction as we witness them step deeper into the mouth of crime across the border. Then when you think all’s done, it drops the bridge from underneath you and envelops you in a haunting finish spearheaded by solid acting.

The cinematography and music went up ten-fold into a level of intensity that was incredibly gripping. (The soundtrack in the trailer is a sampling of what you’d expect, ugh, so good.) It even utilized night vision and aerial cameras with heat markers and shit. It really did make me feel like I was in the middle of each firefight.

Casting

I’ve only seen Emily Blunt in a handful of films and with this role in Sicario, I’m really excited for her to be the lead in The Girl on the Train. Benecio Del Toro is convincingly creepy. That is all.
