[Awards/Tags] — The Dim Sum Book Tag

Miscellaneous: Awards/Tags is the tagline to store random posts that don’t really belong elsewhere. They may involve tags, awards, challenges, and other book blogging nonsense.

The Dim Sum Book Tag

The Dim Sum Book Tag is the brainchild of Joey @ Thoughts and Afterthoughts and Jenna @ Reading With Jenna. Dim sum is a style of Chinese cuisine whereby food is served in small (tapas-like) portions and is common during yum cha (which literally means: drinking tea). This tag is inspired by good company and good eats.

Here are some rules to devour this tag:

  1. Thank the blogger who nominated you, linking back to their site
  2. Devour dim sum and answer the tag questions
  3. Tag five others to join your round table for some dim sum fun
  4. Food coma

(If you could link back to this or Jenna’s post, I’d love to compile a list of taggers who completed it!)

hopeless - colleen hoover - book coverTea: A book that started off hot but quickly turned cold

It might be unfair that I’m going with Collen Hoover’s Hopeless despite only having read 60% (of which I will finish eventually). The prologue-ish was decent in that it brings a lot of questions, drama, angst, and even has dates to look forward to climatic events…but it was such a drag afterwards. Like…tom foolery drag of nonsensical proportions. Perhaps I still can’t really appreciate contemporary romance.

Leigh Bardugo - Six of Crows - Book CoverChiu Chow Dumpling: A book that features elements of land and sea

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. As you’re reading this, I’m not even finished this book…but it’s entertaining enough that it definitely merits this prompt. True story: this is one of my favourite go-to dumplings to eat at dim sum.

patrick ness - knife of never letting go (cover)Rice Noodle Roll: A favourite multilayered character you’ve read (i.e. traits? skills? morally ambiguous?)

Mayor Prentiss in Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this dude is seriously one of my favourite villains that I have had the chance to read. It’s the fact that he doubles as both a fatherly figure and is the baddie to everything that makes every morally ambiguous fiber in this dude stand out.

amy alward - madly - book coverShrimp Dumpling: A book with a transparent blurb that gives the story away

Madly by Amy Alward. Oh my god this book. Literally, the blurb makes it sound like it’s a journey across the world to gather ingredients and reaching checkpoints with contestants being eliminated…and it doesn’t really extend much from that thought. I didn’t really enjoy this book but if you like reading about perilous-ish adventures reminiscent of The Amazing Race…maybe you’d like it?

the rest of us just live here - patrick ness - book coverSteamed BBQ Pork Buns: A book that is fluffy on the outside but packs a punch of flavour (e.g. message? depth? controversy?)

The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness. I didn’t expect this book to be a satire as much as it was but the fact that you get dual-narratives of the “hero story” with the “everyday story” was exceptional. Yes, I could be biased since I Ness is King but Mikey is a standout character. When you read it: there’s this one chapter with his therapist that really hits home for me; right in the feels.

the winners curse - marie rutkoski - book coverChicken Feet: A book with divided opinions

I’m going to go with a book that I haven’t read yet: The Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski. I feel like every single comment is so incredibly polarizing; like there’s no middle ground. In terms of people whom I’ve talked to…it’s way worse than We Were Liars or Red Queen in that regard.

Lotus-Wrapped Sticky Rice:  A book you’ve received/given that was nicely packaged

Aside from receiving book mail in the standard parcel or envelope, I won a bag of books courtesy of Harlequin Teen at a blogger meet-up this summer and it’s the most recent memory of a gift that I received; which included these titles:

bookblogon15_rafflehaul_hqnteen

the outsidersEgg Custard Tart: A book that uses simple ingredients and clichés but executes it perfectly

I’ve gotta throw back to S.E Hinton’s The Outsiders for nostalgia reasons and the fact that the namesake sells the basic concept of not fitting in and weaves the complexities of family, class and socioeconomic concerns, violence, and love.

Mango Pudding with Evaporated Milk: Any book recommendation + beverage/snack that’s a winning combination

A Darker Shade final for IreneI’m still on a A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab high that I’m going to say this book + a plastic red cup of watered down beer courtesy of those college party days (for reasons of the central pub in the story and because red cup = Kell = tipsy London). But if you can’t get your hands on that, then any regular pint will do just fine. #drinkresponsibly

Fried Sesame Balls: A book cover with embossed text/design you just love to run your fingers over

talon - julie kagawa… all my hardcovers are precious to me. If I had to choose one (that I regrettably haven’t read), it’s the design choice of Julie Kagawa’s Talon series. Each book features a different scale pattern to mimic a dragon I presume and it’s just nice to feel. On another front, and perhaps not really embossed, but the hardcover of More Than This by Patrick Ness is brilliant.

Dim Sum Steam Cart: The type of carrying bag you use to bring books around (take a picture!)

I carry so much pointless stuff around wherever I go. You’ll never know when you need meds or a first aid kit, right? LOL.

WHAT IS WITH ME AND CREATING FOOD-RELATED TAGS?!

(And don’t ask why a xiao long bao is in the banner. I just couldn’t find a standard dim sum image that was creative commons zero :/)

  1. Hey, thanks for the tag! You create awesome tags. And I have yet to the Burrito Bowl tag. Hee hee. Anyways, my blog is Bookzillan Society. You spelled it as Bookzillian Society :P.

Thanks again for the tag Joey!

  2. Thanks for the tag, Joey! This is such a fun one. ❤

I read The Outsiders for class back in Year 8 and absolutely loved it. I just love how… realistic? And surprisingly dark? it was for such a thin book for the younger audience. I definitely think it’s one that transcends the ages.

    PS: Love your bag. 🙂

  3. Like what I commented on Jenna’s post, it interests me how you call it in the west/ Australia! I’m Asian and we have like a very short name for it e.g. fried sesame balls is Buchi etc. Plus, I love the descriptions! Ten points to the dimsum pair! 😀

  4. MOUTH IS WATERING AFTER GOING THROUGH THE FOODS AGAIN ON BOTH JENNA AND YOUR POSTS.
Your bag is so cute! And I thought that The Winner’s Curse was right in the middle – not great but not bad. I can see why people are so chicken feet about it. Any Colleen Hoover book for me is the type of murky tea that’s been left on the table for 2 days straight hah.
Thanks as ever for the tag!

  5. Love this tag you and Jenna made! I will definitely be doing it soon. MUST GO FIND DIM SUM!

Love your book bag! 😀 Mine is currently super small, so I carry my books around in my hands. I did recently get an awesome Divergent bag though!
