[Miscellaneous] End of Summer Book Haul — Aug/Sept 2015

Miscellaneous is the tagline to store random posts that don’t really belong elsewhere. They may involve tags, awards, challenges, and other book blogging nonsense.

What’s Miscellaneous Today?
End of Summer Book Haul —
Aug/Sept 2015

I decided not to do a book haul spine poetry this time around because I couldn’t separate the series, so you’ll just have to live with uninspired photos.

The Grisha Trilogy – Leigh Bardugo

BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS, I SHOULD BE DONE SHADOW AND BONE LOL (I started yesterday too). Oh goodness.

Slammed 2/3 & Hopeless – Colleen Hoover

I’m still waiting on Book Outlet to have the first book of Slammed but I’m not in a rush to read Slammed as I am for Hopeless. I keep saying #JoeyReadsNA will happen–and it will–I just need to get over some upcoming obstructions of Fierce Reads book signing, highly anticipated Fall releases, and ARCs before I even actually get into it. Maybe while everyone’s reading CoHo’s November 9, I’ll be reading Hopeless. Maybe.

Let me first say that these two books alone is roughly 3 pounds. Wtf.

Afterworlds – Scott Westerfeld

Afterworlds was a necessary buy, I guess, after reading Zeroes. I was pretty invested in trying something else of Westerfeld. And this is it.

The Three – Sarah Lotz

After getting rejected from reading the ARC of The Three, I still wanted to read it. But I didn’t want it enough to pay $29 for it, sorry. It doesn’t help that the ratings are gloriously low and is shit on by everyone on Goodreads LOL so we’ll see.

(Retrospectively, I shouldn’t have used a black backdrop. OH WELL.)

The Rook – Daniel O’Malley

I gave up waiting for a Hardcover to appear. The urban-fantasy premise is something that sounds super fun to read and with the tagline of “On her Majesty’s supernatural secret service” — YES.

Vault of Dreamers – Caragh M. O’Brien

I don’t know if you know this but this book has been in so many Goodread’s giveaways (that I have obviously lost at) that I probably wanted this more than ever to tide off the feeling of not having this book in my hands. With stuff about boarding school + dreaming + televised lives, I am intrigued–even if many people have shit on this title.

A Darker Shade of Magic – V.E. Schwab

One morning, I awoke to a Book Outlet RT from a friend (I don’t actually follow Book Outlet but I do pop into their tweets from time to time). And there I saw it: ADSOM hardcover on sale. There were like 24 copies left and I am so happy to have snagged one.

Winners Curse & Crime – Marie Rutkoski

This is one of those “I don’t need it but it’d be nice to have” titles that I didn’t really care for in premise but when I saw that there were limited copies of The Winner’s Crime available…well, it seemed like a sign, okay? If you can vouch for this series, then please do because it’s not a title that I’m finding myself needing to start anytime soon.

Afterthoughts:

LAALLAALALALLA my credit card needs a break…BUT I JUST CAN’T HELP CHECKING BOOK OUTLET EVERY MORNING AS PART OF MY ROUTINE.

Cheers,
Joey

  1. You’ll have to post your thoughts on The Vault of Dreamers. I personally did not care for it (despite my attraction to books about boarding schools and books about reality TV shows–the combo of the two really seemed like it was going to be a slam dunk). I thought it started out pretty good, but then the end got…weird.

  2. OHHHH MY GOSHHH. I am seriously so excited to read your review for S&B. Like how do you like the Darkling??

And somehow, I had a feeling you were one of the people that purchased The Winner’s Crime… I literally had it in my cart and then it was gone the next time I checked.

  3. Loving the Shadow and Bone covers. (Is that a limited edition?) Also, I’ve been seeing The Rook everywhere lately, but I didn’t even know what it was about until now, so thanks for peaking my interest!

  6. Oh please give Vault of Dreamers a chance! I’m glad you picked it up. I read Caragh O’Brien’s Birthmarked trilogy and I absolutely loved it. She’s not an author I hear very much about but I love her. Can’t wait to hear what you think!

    1. Your NOT you’re. Gah, I hate when other people do that and then I do it myself. I’m gonna blame it on the fact I haven’t had all of my coffee yet this morning.

  8. Great haul! I really want to read some of Colleen Hoover’s work. Hopeless looks so good! Afterworlds is a ridiculously huge book but from what I’ve seen those that aren’t scared by the page numbers have really enjoyed it. I haven’t read any of his work after the Uglies series so I really need to pick this or Zeros up. Hope you enjoy all the books. 🙂

  9. Some of these books I’ve read and loved (The Winners Curse), liked (Shadow and Bone). Hopeless was alright. Over the top at times, questionable decision making by characters and also a very quick read, could not put it down.
But some books I thought were unnecessary (sounds harsh but I don’t mean it in that way…you’ll understand once you read them). I want to tell u the books to avoid but then again I don’t want you to regret your purchase.

Anyway, please do review on winners curse once u’ve read it. I Always like to hear what people think of that book; I’ve read some really interesting reviews about it.
