Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. I thought this would be a fun way to share a condensed version of potential rambles and thoughts that I have.
This Week’s Theme:
Things Book Bloggers Say
and their Subtext
Initial Thoughts:
So I don’t know about you but its perhaps a rite of passage to use some of these one-liners in your reading/blogging career because they say so much with so little. We obviously mean no harm with these common phrases but one has to wonder if there’s some underlying meaning in them. Or maybe I’m reading too much these words (no, I refuse to believe that).
Just as a note: even if you have used these phrases, I’m making fun of myself more than I’m poking fun at you or the community. Self-inflicted satire, you know? But you probably are guilty for some of these–admit it.
Credit goes to Josephine @ Word Revel for talking through my crazy with me for this weeks prompt.
The Subtext in Common Sayings
“I hope you enjoy it…”
…or else.
“I can’t wait to hear your thoughts…”
…like it? we’re best friends; dislike it? you’re dead to me. Or if I haven’t read it: YOU ARE MY GUINEA PIG. (But we’re all mostly somewhere in the middle, yeah?)
“I really wanted to like this book…”
…but I didn’t, so this is my fail-safe comment to protect me from passive aggressive rage due to unpopular opinions.
“Aw, sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy it…”
…BUT WHY AM I APOLOGIZING TO THIS PERSON THO??
“I haven’t heard of this before but it’s now on my TBR…”
…my mental TBR [for now] and nothing concrete. (Because not everyone has Goodreads opened at the ready 24/7.) Then I will forget about it until the next time I see this and then I can say:
“I’ve been meaning to read…”
…but fuck TBR piles, mood reading, commitments, zero funds, life, and other factors.
“I need to read this before the film comes out…”
…because I’m a book purist. Otherwise, you’re like me and tell yourself you should but you obviously know you won’t. A white lie indeed.
“I need this now.”
…just me (no one else). I needed this yesterday, actually.
“I’m in a book slump/book hangover…”
…and woe is fucking me — YOU DON’T UNDERSTANNNNNND. NO ONE UNDERSTANDSSSS.
“Wtf did I just read?”
…I mean it’s a book, but…what? Did I even read the same book as everyone else?
“OMG [NAME] IS MY BOOK BF/GF/SO”
…and I would totally homewreck this ship. Maybe–yes. No, I can’t. But they’re still my book BF/GF/SO CAPSLOCKISBROKEN.
“I ship [them]…”
…MY LIFE IS NOTHING WITHOUT THE COMMUNION OF THESE TWO FICTITIOUS INDIVIDUALS.
Afterthoughts:
I’m sure there are PLENTY more but these are the few I’ve used numerous times or have seen the most of. So that’s that. But subtext or not, I’m awesome, you’re awesome, we’re all still awesome.
Think I’m missing some? Leave me a comment!
plugplugplug: I’m giving away $25 CAD via. The Book Depository as per my birthday celebrations last week. Full details here.
Cheers,
Joey

Yes to all of these. I hate when an author comments on a review and its a subpar review and you just feel compelled to apologize. Like, I’m sorry I didn’t like your book that’s got nothing to do with you personally?

I have had no idea what it meant to say “i ship..” but now i do lol thank you!

I had to laugh SO HARD! They are all so true, but sometimes I actually mean them and not the subtext, but mostly you were absolutely right! Glad you chose this for your freebie – very creative!

OMG I’M GUILTY OF EVERYTHING CAPSLOCKISBROKEN. More than half of of the time I absolutely mean what I say, but the rest, it’s more of a.. courtesy? This calls for a change in strategy lol

I’m definitely guilty of “I really wanted to like this book…” and “I haven’t heard of this before but it’s now on my TBR…”. I’m sure there is more I’m guilty of, too. Great topic!

Hahahaha YES to all of these!! I would totally be a home wrecker for like all my Book Boyfriends! Or maybe I’d settle for a side chick cause I don’t actually want my ship to crash! And when I’m like ‘Oh, it sucks you didn’t enjoy it’ what I’m actually saying is WHAT THE EVER LOVING FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?? THAT BOOK IS BRILLIANT AND YOU ARE JUST WRONG!!!
I love this list!! Great idea 😂😂

Actually I do have GR as one of my favorite tabs. So I am that reader that actually physically marks it as “to be read” on GR once I tell someone it’s on my TBR (there’s no such thing as a mental one for me, like how do you even keep up?? …or wait, I guess you don’t).

I really enjoyed this (see what I did there, now you don’t have to say “Aww I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it”). This made my day. I’m sure I’ve done half the things on this list unfortunately. In my job too I have to use a lot of what I call “fluff” statements which makes the masses happy but doesn’t really help about getting opinions across.

Lol, this was hilarious. I’d noticed that there were some things that book bloggers say often, but this is just GOLD. Of all of these, I probably say the first, fifth, and sixth the most, because you’re right, I’ll most likely forget to add it to the TBR and eventually to read it XD
