A Trick in the Light – Lois Metzger
Even though summer officially starts next week, I started reading this over the weekend (and so it’ll probably carry over into the next month or so). It’s a YA-mental illness book narrated by the eating disorder itself. It’s pretty weird so far.
Mike Welles had everything under control. But that was before. Now things are rough at home, and they’re getting confusing at school. He’s losing his sense of direction, and he feels like he’s a mess. Then there’s a voice in his head. A friend, who’s trying to help him get control again.
The Way of Kings – Brandon Sanderson
Lalala, I have a snail’s pace in making my way through this beast. I have come to realize that it is both fun and not fun carrying this hardcover around on commute LOL.
It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors.
Hello, I Love You – Katie Stout
I saw it in store but decided “no, not yet. soon.” and soon it shall be. All of those negative reviews I’ve read only inspire me to want to check this out. Maybe the trick to reading this is to have kpop or the kdrama Heartstrings playing in the background (that CNBlue guy was who she imagined, right?)
A teen escapes to a boarding school abroad and falls for a Korean pop star in this fun and fresh romantic novel in the vein of Anna and the French Kiss.
Red Queen – Victoria Aveyard
After months of self-hyping to myself and to all of you…I think it is time. I’m half hoping that it’s a solid read so I don’t have to write a glowing rant but the other half of me wants that rant to happen. I’m a loser, I know.
The poverty stricken Reds are commoners, living under the rule of the Silvers, elite warriors with god-like powers.
Flick – Abigail Tarttelin
This is kind of an ARC. It’s a re-release (I think) but I’ll just classify it as such; meaning I should review it pronto.
My name is Flick and these are my images of my disconnected life, my forgettable weeks and unforgettable weekends. I am one of the disaffected youth.
We All Looked Up – Tommy Wallach
So I re-watched Coherence the other day (solid indie film, highly recommended) and the whole asteroid thing reminded me of this book again. Welcome back to the top of the pile, WALU.
Before the asteroid we let ourselves be defined by labels:
The athlete, the outcast, the slacker, the overachiever.But then we all looked up and everything changed.
Less Than Hero – S.G. Browne
Was contacted to review this superhero novel that basically takes regular folk who undergo clinical tests for cash and gives them ridiculous superpowers (e.g. from the blurb: “Faster than a spreading rash! More powerful than dry heaves! Able to put villains to sleep with a single yawn!”) This sounds like wonderful satire already omg. Now I just wait for it to be mailed to me.
Under cover of night, Lloyd and his guinea pig friends band together to project their debilitating side effects onto petty criminals who prey upon the innocent. When a horrible menace with powers eerily similar to their own threatens the city, only one force can stop this evil: the handful of brave men who routinely undergo clinical trials.
Freakboy – Kristen Elizabeth Clark
With Pride taking place globally (and I think next week-ish in Toronto), I should think about expediting this read (albeit written in verse = I apparently read slower) in support. The story is about the transgender community.
From the outside, Brendan Chase seems to have it pretty easy. He’s a star wrestler, a video game aficionado, and a loving boyfriend to his seemingly perfect match, Vanessa. But on the inside, Brendan struggles to understand why his body feels so wrong—why he sometimes fantasizes having long hair, soft skin, and gentle curves. Is there even a name for guys like him? Guys who sometimes want to be girls? Or is Brendan just a freak?
Reality Boy – A.S. King
Big Brother US returns next week. This means more reality television and related things. I doubt I’d be reading this but I do get on a high during season premieres.
Gerald Faust knows exactly when he started feeling angry: the day his mother invited a reality television crew into his five-year-old life. Twelve years later, he’s still haunted by his rage-filled youth—which the entire world got to watch from every imaginable angle—and his anger issues have resulted in violent outbursts, zero friends, and clueless adults dumping him in the special education room at school.
Tangled – Emma Chase
#JoeyReadsNA could be a thing. I remember Miggy (@thequirkyreader) recommending this to me (or maybe it was that he told me that it has a male protagonist in NA, so, yeah). Aside from this choice, if you have any other recommendations for NA reads (that isn’t Colleen Hoover—not that I’m against her, it’s that I’ve heard the choirs sing praise of her enough that I know to read her eventually), I’d love to hear from you!
Drew Evans is a winner. Handsome and arrogant, he makes multimillion dollar business deals and seduces New York’s most beautiful women with just a smile. He has loyal friends and an indulgent family. So why has he been shuttered in his apartment for seven days, miserable and depressed? He’ll tell you he has the flu. But we all know that’s not really true.
Afterthoughts:
If you know of a solid pre-ordering site (with minimal/no shipping fees—that isn’t Book Depository), I’d love to hear your thoughts for reasons of a very important book that releases late August in the UK and regrettably not within NA until months later. #why

I am fully determined to read it this summer. I will. I must. It has surely passed through 10+ times on these TTT lists that now it is written in the universe somewhere that I will have it read (soon).

I love that #JoeyReadsNA could be a real thing. SO EXCITED. I read Tangled, and remember liking it but I don’t remember much else and I never continued with the series or more of that author’s books. So, not sure what that says, but I REALLY look forward to your rant on that one.

I enjoy reading as much as I enjoy writing about my thoughts pertaining to the read. They’re synonymous for me, I think.

I love Way of Kings, but it definitely feels like a life commitment. That series is the longest book I read for the last two years in a row (according to Goodreads). So many pages…

A life commitment indeed. I heard Stormlight Archive is slated to be 2 sets of 5 books at 1k+ pages each. 10k+ pages? That’s so intense…

omg. For any other author, I’m not sure I’d do it. But Sanderson’s one of my favorites, so I’m in for the long haul.
I tell myself it could be worse. I could be starting Danielewski’s 27 volume story of a girl who finds a kitten. lol

Yup #JoeyReadsNA should definitely be a thing. I just binge read five of Tammara Webber’s books so I guess that is my official endorsement of her NA awesomeness 🙂 Less Than Hero is new to me- sounds like fun. Flick is on my reading agenda too but I forgot to add it to the list. Looks like you are set for some good summer reading!

I really want to read We All Looked Up as well! I unfortunately do not know of a pre-order site (it’s for the new Patrick Ness book isn’t it?), but I think if you look around enough you could find one. Great list!

I was close to putting Red Queen on my list here but there’s just too many books. Maybe my next TBR lol. Wait, what? A Trick in the Light is narrated by an eating disorder? Like how Book Thief was narrated by death? That’s .. different. What’s also different is that it’s a male protagonist going through an eating disorder. I’ve seen so many books written with females going through it, it’s a nice change.

Yeah, that’s a good comparison to make. It’s kind of creepy to think about it that something like death/anxiety has a narrative voice. But yes, I wanted to see how it was represented from the male side of things since you see it often (well, often enough) with female protagonists.

That’s too bad about Hello, I Love You since, say what?, Kpop and YA together? THAT SOUNDS PRETTY DANG COOL TO ME.
I’ve never heard of most of these books but seeing you get excited about reading them is making me hyped too. The premise of A Trick in the Light does sound weird but hey, as long as it’s executed well, I’m all in for weirdness.

Negative reviews for Hello, I Love You will only fuel my need to read it haha (just so I can see for myself). But I’ve heard that there’s like little-to-no kpop in it so that’s a bummer.

Ah, Joey. Joey, Joey. How long will you evade the epic-ness of CoHo? This simply can’t go on! A Court of Thorns and Roses is NA fantasy, which rocks. Other recs include I’ll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios and Come Back To Me by Mila Gray. Anything by Katie McGarry too. With absolutely no intentions of bursting your bubble, though I fear I might, We All Looked Up was a little disappointing for me. I really enjoyed the author’s writing style, but it was a slow read and thought it could have been stronger. Looking forward to more from him though, so not all bad. What book has you dying to preorder?! R x

No bubbles burst at all. I value other peoples judgments and always look to make my own inferences as well.
I’ve never seen (or heard) of fantasy being labeled as NA; they’re usual YA or Adult. This is…college-age Fantasy? LOL. But thank you for this rec’s. I will keep them in my back pocket as I search for discounts.

Yep, A Court of Thorns and Roses has a 19 year old protagonist, and it’s being promoted as NA Fantasy. I loved it. It’s a Beauty and the Beast re-telling, but with Fae.

I was so surprised when I found out Katie M. Stout really was thinking of Heartstrings when she wrote HILY. It makes total sense why some scenes made me think of the drama.
And I think you’ve included The Red Queen in almost every Top Ten Tuesday post. It really is about time you’ve read it. (I have no plans on buying/reading it myself though.) 😛

Me too–only because Heartstrings was pretty mediocre for me LOL (I think it was because I didn’t understand why there were so many singers transitioning to acting roles). At least Dream High was less cheeseballs.
DON’T WORRY, I HAVE SWORN SO MANY PROMISES FOR RED QUEEN TO BE READ THAT IT WILL DEFINITELY BE DONE THIS SUMMER.

So far, I’ve yet to read a positive review on Hello, I Love You, to be honest! I’m pretty sure I will still read it, but I’m not yet sure where it places on my priority list. Red Queen is a book I’ve been saying I’ll be reading soon, but I still haven’t gotten around to it, hopefully I’ll read it during the summer! I’ll be looking forward to your thoughts (or rant!) on it. 🙂 Happy reading, these books seem to have an interesting variety in genre.

Less Than Hero sounds awesome, and I need to go add it to my Goodreads TBR shelf pronto! I’ve read something else by that author, and thought it rocked. We All Looked Up sounds like it’d be my speed as well. Great list! I hope you enjoy your summer reading!

Very important book! HAHAHA. I’ll be running to my local bookstore to get it because there’s no way I trust TBD with delivering this precious before I burst. If you’re okay with reading the ebook first, you could try kobo.com, though you’d probably have to bypass the country setting with a foreign address. Or you could convince someone who can buy it locally to courier it to you if you’re that desperate. Lol.

I still want a copy of Red Queen, cuz that cover. Not sure how I’ll feel about the book itself, because what with it getting a movie deal already, there’s a lot of hype going into it. I do want to see your rant/rave on it. I’m sure it’ll be entertaining!

Everyone says wonderful things about Red Queen’s cover but I’m only thinking it’s ‘okay’. It’s no A Thousand Pieces of You… (but that’s just my preference hah)

Maybe I need to spend more time with it. From what I’ve read, one stanza takes me fooooorever to read because I am perhaps over-analyzing what’s being said.
